Let’s Make Minekey More Friendly
posted on Nov 19 2008
Recently several users have expressed their concern about instances of insult and personal attack. Our vision at Minekey is to provide a shared environment for people from all over the world to connect and share their perspective. To accomplish this vision, it is important we maintain it as a place where people feel safe and comfortable to share their opinions.
We consulted several Industry experts on how to make Minekey a safe and comfortable environment that promotes sharing. We have received some practical advice based on the best practices adopted by top Internet communities and we plan to move forward with their recommendations. As a part of this exercise, we have also retained a moderation team well versed with the Industry best practices to help achieve our goals. Some of the suggestions we will implement over the coming weeks are:
1. Profanity filters
2. Block user function to prevent certain users from posting notes on profile
3. Content rating and reputation system that helps surface quality content and discussions
We are committed to making Minekey more friendly. We seek support from all our users to help us reach this goal by complying with the Community Guidelines. Violation of Community Guidelines could result in disabling of content and user access. Listed below are a few suggestions on what constitutes good behavior and bad behavior on Minekey:
Do
1. Respect the opinions of Minekey peers, even when you disagree with them.
2. Avoid using profanity.
3. Delete any offensive comments on your opinions and any offensive notes on your profile.
4. Use the report abuse system judiciously to alert the Minekey team.
Don’t
1. Personal attacks are prohibited.
2. Trolling is prohibited.
3. Sexually explicit material is prohibited
4. Creating multiple accounts and identities is prohibited– It’s a place for real people to connect through real conversations.
For more details refer to Minekey Community Guidelines (http://minekey.com/footer/code). The use of Minekey is a privilege, not a right. The Minekey staff reserves the right to revoke access and remove content without notice. If you have any questions or suggestions email us at “community AT minekey DOT com”.

Perhaps while you’re making those changes you could also make the necessary changes to the Facebook version of the application to ensure it conforms to the Facebook application guidelines. Specifically regarding prompting users to send invites, and pre-selecting Facebook friends when sharing opinions.
I’m not sure why you expect your users to adhere to your guidelines when you don’t adhere to the guidelines imposed upon you.

Don’t get things too complicated, respect free speech where restrictions will only limit true thoughts

Although I think your intentions are admirable, I think censorship is overkill. You would do better to segregate the Minekey space into adult and non-adult content, and apply the above rules to the latter, with a prominent notice that the adult area is less moderated. That way, people who really feel that, as Michelle Pfeiffer put it, “there are some instances when no other word will do” (she was referring to the F-word in an interview given Inside The Actor’s Studio), can take the gloves off and get down to business, while at the same time there is a play area for those with children or childlike sensibilities.
As it stands now, Minekey has largely lost its relevance for me, not because I would normally infract against your rules, but simply because I am not hearing freely expressed opinions any more; it has become another lukewarm, plain-Jane commercial medium. So I will not be visiting, unless I hear that policies have become less restrictive.

These suggestions are very good - you will no doubt get many neighsayers. But without following a professional line here for the sake of a few hundred users (and their fake accounts), who wish to retaint their percieved “right” right to make Minekey an abusive and hate site for themselves and their clicque, many thousands of users will continue tp turn away in horror. Thousands will be lost in high churn rates.
For Minekey to succeed as a commercial venture it must jettison those who seek an agenda other than sticking to the community guidelines that they signed up for.
Have the courage of your convictions - stay the course - don’t let up on this proper course of action.

“Our vision at Minekey is to provide a shared environment for people from all over the world to connect and share their perspective.” - that’s why i like this place that much; i haven’t experienced personal attacks or insults but i’m very sorry they appear here. to share opinions is not to fight personalities but to seek the common things between them or to get enriched by the differences. even in defending causes, we have to stay humans before to be enemies; then all the struggles and fights will be reduced because of reducing their “reasons”.
all the best to all of you, girls & guys, and thank you!! wishing you a good health and happiness!!

I think this is a step in the right direction;if you observe closely,of late i have been away from minekey simply because some folks decided to paint a particular race and religion in such a manner that is demeaning though i tried stating the fact to the guy but he won’t boug in his opinion so i just left him alone and stepped. Is about time you deal with this situation moreso that the newest USA president is a colour man you will be getting more even tons of abusive words from racist contributors.

@ James - As a matter of fact Profanity filter would accomplish the exact suggestion you have articulated. When we introduce the Profanity filter, people who opt-in for Profanity will be able to view “R” rated content on Minekey. Rest of the users will view “G” rated content suitable for general audience. Hope to see you back soon.

@ all users - If you have any questions of your personal interest be answered - please email us at “community AT minekey DOT com”. That would help avoid duplication. Wordpress blog (which we use) does not automatically mail out comment replies to the users. On a periodic basis we will extract questions that may be of public interest and post the answers in Minekey Community Bulletin.
